Professionalism and Scope of Practice
The massage therapy and bodywork profession ascribes to a code of ethical behavior, which is available upon request. I follow all of the statements in this ethical code to the highest standard of professionalism. I do not engage in intimate relationships with clients. My bodywork practice mandates a professional relationship of the highest standard between client and therapist.
Personal and professional boundaries are respected at all times.
Massage therapy is useful for a variety of physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, as it treats the person holistically, as a whole. However, massage therapy does not address serious medical conditions; these are beyond the scope of my practice as a bodyworker. After assessing a client, I may refer the client to an osteopath, chiropractor, or nutritionist, among other possibilities. This is in order to support the highest possible level of care for the client’s health and well-being. I perform services for which I’m qualified and able to do, and refer to qualified specialists when work is not within my scope of practice or not in the client’s best interest.
Your health information and privacy are kept strictly confidential, in compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Act.
During the session, clients may undress to whatever their comfort level is, and clients will be appropriately covered and draped at all times throughout the session, uncovering only the body part to be worked on.
I will respect the boundaries of all indications and contraindications pertaining to each client’s health. I reserve the right to end, reschedule, or modify a session based on indications or contraindications. This is in the interest of protecting and promoting the client’s health and well-being.
During the session, clients are encouraged to relax, and to inform me immediately if anything feels uncomfortable in any way: physically, emotionally, or otherwise.
If the client is uncomfortable for any reason, they may ask me to end the session and I will do so immediately. Conversely, if I, the practitioner, am uncomfortable for any reason, I reserve the right to end the session immediately.
The bodywork and all modalities I provide are strictly therapeutic and are not sexual in any manner. Any illicit or suggestive remarks or behavior on the client’s part will result in an immediate termination of the therapy session without refund.
I reserve the right to refrain from working on a client who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
I keep accurate records and review the client’s charts before each session.
All clients are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of age, gender, race, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, body type, political affiliation, state of health, and personal habits.
I stay current, well-informed, and up-to-date with the most current techniques and information in the field of bodywork, and engage in extensive continuing education to be able to offer the most advanced, informed and relevant bodywork experience to you.
